SF 2009!!

Every year for the past three years, I have gone to San Diego to visit Switchback. It's a Pioneer Day tradition (although the definition of "Pioneer Day" changes from year to year). This year, however, Switchback has moved to Provo (Yay!!!) and we don't need to drive 10 hours to see her. So instead, we're going to drive MORE hours to go see San Francisco. It's my first time, and Murray can be my guide. I'm so excited. It also seems like such an adult vacation. It's still weird for me to be in the pilot seat of my vacations. It seems like such a parent thing to do, and then I defer to all their decisions. Even visiting Switchback wasn't totally grown-up because we always stayed with her for free, and we didn't really plan what we were going to do until we were actually there.

So here's our tentative plan. I don't like to give dates, because robbers can break into my home, but just so that the robbers know, my mom will be in town while we're away and she'll be using our home. And we have a bad-A neighborhood watch neighbor who keeps an eye on things. So don't even think about it.

Day 1: Drive to Carson City to stay with KT and her family. It has been years since she and I have had a chance to really sit down and visit, so this will be wonderful.
Day 2: Drive to San Francisco. Check into the apartment we're subletting for a week. The apartment sounds great and it is in a cool location as far as I can tell. Close to Golden Gate Bridge and close to water. Soooooo cool!
Day 3: Play in SF!
Day 4: Play in SF!
Day 5: Teach a little and play in SF!
Day 6: Teach a little and play in SF!
Day 7: Teach a little and play in SF!
Day 8: Drive to Lake Tahoe to camp
Day 9: Drive home

I am so grown up. I planned all that myself!

Any suggestions of must-do's in San Francisco?

Coit Tower! Pier 49! Fisherman's Wharf (where I found the most delicious clam chowder in a sourdough breadbowl)! Ghiradelli Square! Alcatraz! Visit my grandmother! Oh wait. That's my list, not yours, though she is a fabulous woman. :) On the way to SF, visit the Jelly Belly factory - free samples and dirt cheap Belly Flops (perfectly good Jelly Bellies that didn't pass inspection).

I love SF.

Alcatraz! Alcatraz! Alcatraz! It is worth every bit of the $26 that you have to pay. I HEART Alcatraz.

Ghirardeli Square is also a must have. And if you see the sparkly guy there (you'll know what I mean if you see him), it is worth tipping him a dollar to get your picture taken with him.

I hear there are other non-touristy things to do, too, but I haven't done them. So, I can't really recommend those.

We really liked the Asian Art museum in SF. One thing we wanted to do is rent bicycles and ride them over the Golden Gate Bridge, but the day we planned to do it was sadly cold and rainy. Another fun thing on Fisherman's Wharf is the Musee Mechanique, which is a collection of old coin-operated games and stuff. Bring lots of quarters.

On Fishermen's Wharf there is a place called the Boudin bread factory, and for a few bucks you can take a little tour of how they make sourdough bread. At the end of the tour they have a 'tasting room' where you can try samples. We thought it was a lot of fun. The Jelly Belly tour in Fairfield is tons of fun too; it's right off I-80, but look up directions before you go because it's easy to get lost.

You have to eat at Boudin Bakery and have a clam chowder bowl. I live where there is abundant seafood and I have yet to taste better. I've been to SF more times than I can count. It's a great place. Check out Little Italy - they have some pretty authentic restaurants on the strip. Also, my parental units reside close to Tahoe nowadays. Too bad I won't be there (or will I? you left out specific dates because of those robbers). Sounds like your trip is packed anyway. Have fun!

If you're an egyptophile, King Tut is in town.

Berkeley has nice restaurants and the most awesome independent bookstore ever Moe's http://www.moesbooks.com. My family and I loved Monterrey. They have a great aquarium and the Santa Cruz boardwalk is fun. I agree with what everyone else said about San Francisco. You should check out Lombard St. if you like What's Up Doc and if you have awesome thigh muscles.

Well you must have fresh shrimp on the pier and eat a huge brownie sundae at ghair...oh however you spell that place.

Oh hi! My cousin Jill (the holyoaks) commented on your blog, how fun! :)

Monterey Bay Aquarium is amazing. Plus, like they said, Ghirardelli Square. (There's a great little cupcake shop across from the Ghirardhelli store.) I also enjoyed the farmers market at the ferry building. And there's supposed to be a cool sciency museum.
