About Goats

What I Learned about Goats at the Utah State Fair

1) Goats are adorable. The ones that love me, anyway. That's most of them, according to Miss Nemesis, who called me the Goat Whisperer. I want a goat.

2) Clean goats feel like velvet.

3) Goats sometimes have lop-ears. Sometimes they have no ears.

4) Goats are affectionate. And sweet.

5) Some goats have tassels on their necks. These are soft and could be harvested as lucky rabbit's feet.

6) Goats blow their noses on Murray when he tries to pet them.

What I Learned about Goats on My Mission in Italy

1) Goats don't taste good.

2) Goat cheese tastes good.

What I've Concluded

1) I should get a pet goat, make cheese, and not eat the goat.

And now, the lyrics to a song Grandpa would sing when we were growing up.

Oh Patty McGinty, an Irishman of note,
Came into a fortune and bought himself a goat.
"A goat's milk! A goat's milk! I'm sure to have me fill!"
But when he brought his nanny home, he found it was a bill.

You left out that a goat will eat anything: upholstery, laundry, you name it.

I do love goat cheese. Delicious.

I loooooove me some goat cheese!

Goats are kind of cute in a weird, alienish sort of way.

I kind of like the idea of having a human trash compactor in my yard. I mean, not that I'm planning to feed it nails or anything like that.

If we get a pet goat, then I am wearing gloves around it during flu season for sure.

If only it ate what you wanted it to, instead of anything, anything at all.

I should perhaps post a rebuttal to this post, because not all goats are sweet and lovable. Sometimes evil spirits enter the bodies of goats and torment their owners.

But I agree in general, and if I could have another goat, I would. I would drink its milk and possibly (but probably not) make cheese. I would not eat it, because that would mean the end of the milk. But I do like goat meat. When we ate one of the devil goats from my youth, I laughed evilly the entire time and savored every bite. My sister sobbed. She wasn't as much of a victim as I had been.

Patty McGinty should have done his homework before he bought. Buyer beware. A lesson for us all.

My 7 year old daughter just learned a few things about goats, such as their milk being tasty and easier to digest than cow's milk. I asked her what she'd name her pet goat, and she says, "Billy. Of course." Cute. :)

BTW, found you through Nemesis's blog. Good luck with the wedding plans!

We had a goat for a while when I was a kid. She kept chewing through her rope and running away. She also ate the lining of my dad's motorcycle helmet and made him really mad. One day she disappeared and my parents are convinced that our neighbors barbequed her.

Apparently goat's milk can make pretty good money too because it tastes like cow's milk but is easier for toddlers (and other humans) to digest. We have some friends with goats.

So, what sorts of things will you whisper to the goats, or is that a secret?
